WHO CAN DO HARVEST WORK?

  • An Australian Citizen or permanent resident.  This includes people who get an income support payment from Services Australia or the Department of Veterans' Affairs and are looking for work.  Australian job seekers can start their career in agriculture from seasonal and harvest jobs.
  • An eligible working holiday maker holding a visa with appropriate working rights.
  • An overseas student with working rights in Australia.
  • Holding a temporary work visa with general work rights, not restricted to an employer or type of work.

IF YOU'RE A JOB SEEKER

Harvest work in Australia involves a variety of jobs like fruit or vegetable picking, packing, pruning and planting.  The type of work varies between locations and the time of year.  Jobs are available in harvest areas in most Australian states and territories.  Jobs are seasonal and can range from just a few weeks to six months or more.

Is Harvest work right for me?

Harvest work can be physically demanding.  You don't need special skills to be a harvest worker, but employers may look for certain qualities, including physical strength and stamina.

Tasks for harvest workers can involve climbing ladders, walking through fields, constant bending or operating heavy machinery.  Harvest workers need to be strong enough to lift heavy tubs or bags of produce and tools and be able to do repetitive tasks.

IF YOU'RE AN EMPLOYER

If you're an employer, you have a duty to provide every worker with a safe and healthy work environment.  Contact our HTS Harvest Officer for advice and help with:

  • Planning your workforce and recruitment needs
  • Sourcing suitable workers to meet your harvest labour needs
  • Advertising your hob vacancies on the Harvest Trail Jobs Board
  • Connecting you with eligible harvest workers

Legal Workers

It is your responsibility as a harvest employer to hire legal workers.  You must NOT employ or pay someone for work if they don't have permission to work in Australia.

If you employ or plan to employ a working holiday maker visa holder, you must register with the ATO before paying them their first payment.

Our Harvest Officer will do the Visa checks for you, and connect you with the right job seekers who are eligible for harvest work.
